An error in the dictionary content

A wrong meaning or reading, a typo in an entry, a missing word — this is data from open dictionaries, and corrections are made in those projects, not in the app. Report it to the source — the fix will reach the app with the next update (we aim to update roughly twice a year).

The source of a given entry is shown on the word card and on the sources page.

Do I need the internet?

No. Search, sentence parsing and audio work offline. The network is only used for external links and for anonymous usage statistics.

Why is the app so large?

Dictionary apps usually download their data separately after install. Here everything — the dictionaries, the audio and the text analyzer — ships inside the app, so it's fully usable the moment it's installed, with no extra downloads. The actual download is smaller than the installed size: the store compresses apps in transit.

Is it really free? Any ads or subscriptions?

Yes — free, with no ads and no subscriptions. The app is built on open dictionaries and resources made by their communities, so keeping it free is our way of saying thanks to those projects.

Where do the translations come from?

English meanings come from JMdict, with other open sources for names, kanji, furigana and pitch accent. The full list with licences is on the home page and on the “About” screen in the app.

Where do the Russian kanji meanings come from?

The Russian meanings in the kanji breakdown (漢字) are machine-generated: a machine translation of KanjiDic2's English meanings, cross-checked against the Russian Wikipedia jōyō kanji list. They cover the ~2,136 jōyō kanji; for the rest the English meaning is shown. They are not taken from an academic kanji dictionary.

Why are the kanji meanings sometimes Russian and sometimes English?

The language of the kanji-breakdown meanings follows your first (top) active dictionary. If a Russian dictionary (Warodai) is on top, meanings are Russian; if an English one (JMdict) is on top, they are English. Reorder your dictionaries to switch. (If the “Kanji names” setting is set to WaniKani, the English name is always shown.)

Why don't some words show pitch accent?

Pitch-accent data comes from the open Kanjium project and covers roughly half of the words. Where there is no data, the contour simply isn't shown — that's a gap in the source data, not a bug.

Is the audio a real voice actor?

No — the pronunciation is synthesized (TTS) and covers the most common words. If a word has no audio button, there is simply no recording for it; that's expected.

How often is the dictionary updated?

The content is updated periodically — we aim for an update roughly twice a year, pulling in fresh data from the source projects. Found an error in an entry? Report it to the source (JMdict) and the fix arrives with an update.

How does privacy work?

The app doesn't collect your queries, opened words or history. Details are in the privacy policy.

Why does the app ask for the microphone and the camera?

The microphone is used for voice search, the camera and photos for text recognition (OCR). Each permission is requested only when you first use that feature, and everything else works without them.

Can I add my own dictionary?

Yes. The app imports dictionaries in the od-dict/1 format — see the format description.

What is the Ancient Greek version?

A separate app — an Ancient Greek–Russian dictionary built on the same foundation as the Japanese one. The search, the word cards and the reader are shared; the language-specific parts are its own — for example, a different morphology (parsing of declined and conjugated forms) and a different text recognition from photos. It has its own privacy policy.
